1974 RSR TURBO CARRERA 2.14

One of 3 RSR turbos built for Porsche for the 1974 season,9114609102/r13 was unquestionably the most successfully raced. With lead factory-team drivers, Gijs Van Lennep and Herb Mueller behind the wheel, R13 finished every race it entered, producing  a 7th OA at Paul Richard, a 5th OA at Brands Hatch, a 2nd OA at Watkins Glen and a 2nd OA at the 24-Hours of Le Mans.  The Le Mans finish was particularly noteworthy in as much as the GT-based Turbo was forced to race against sports-racing prototypes from Matra, Mirage, Alfa Romeo and others.  Without a transmission problem (no 5th gear!), the Turbo might have been the overall Le Mans Winner in 1974.

Following the 1974 season, R13 was purchased from Porsche by Vasek Polak, a California Porsche dealer.  Other than for renting his car to Ted Field and Danny Ongais for the 1977 24-Hours of Daytona and to George Folmer for the 1977 Mid-Ohio 3-Hours, R13 was never raced again.

Today, R13 remains cosmetically unrestored in its original Martini livery.  R13 was the only one of the original three cars to be equipped with the superior-cooling; flat-fan set-up.

*A fourth car, R5 was built up to turbo specs from a 1973 Martini RSR shell and served as the development mule.  It was raced once in 1974 at Imola where it DNF ed.  This car has subsequently been restored to its 1973, non-turbo configuration.  The other two 1974 cars, R9 and R12 are in California and the Porsche Museum , respectively.
